Industry sources have estimated that 17 to 27 billion gallons of polluted mine discharge water will be generated by 40 existing hard rock mines (e.g. gold, copper, uranium mines) in the US each year, every year, in perpetuity. It says water treatment for these mines will cost as much as $67 billion per year.  Mining companies are under increasing pressure to address their mine discharge water, much of which remains untreated and held in reservoirs or in deactivated mines.  Large amounts of water produced from mine drainage, mine cooling, aqueous extraction and other mining processes increases the potential for chemicals to contaminate ground and surface water.
